Scrum Master

Facilitator and servant-leader, increasing empowerment and collaboration

Description

The Scrum Master supports the development team to create gourmet delicacies. They do this by blending the right techniques with their responsibilities:

Scrum Master is the curator of Agile recipes

As a coach to the Development Team and the organisation, they introduce Scrum theory, practices, and tools so everyone can collaborate effectively and have a cohesive approach to delivering value. A great Scrum Master will adapt and select appropriate practices and tools for the individual, team and organisation they are coaching depending on the need at any given time. They use the theory and practices to guide the development team, support the Product Owner, and coach the wider organisation in Scrum adoption but also acting as a change agent driving continuous improvement. They are responsible for establishing the daily standup, sprint review, sprint planning and sprint retrospectives and championing agile practices.

The perfect sous-chef

When a team member is struggling, or a problem hinders the team, the Scrum Master is by the team’s side and steps in to help the team whisk away impediments. This helps the team to stay focused on the agreed goals.

They also protect the team from an unsustainable work pace through planning prowess and stakeholder management. By limiting unwanted disturbances and coaching the Product Owner and team in describing and estimating work, the Scrum Master creates an safe environment for the Development Team. Psychologically safety is a big topic for a Scrum Master too; high performing teams have high levels of psychological safety.
